What the studies measured

Published trials of red and near-infrared light, with the journal and the year.

36%

fewer wrinkles at best, measured after 4 weeks of red and near-infrared light

76 adults, two sessions a week. Measured wrinkles dropped by up to 36% and skin elasticity rose by up to 19%, and biopsies showed more collagen and elastic fibers.

Lee et al. · Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology B · 2007

Wrinkles
M1 ↓

inflammatory macrophage markers came down under red and near-infrared light

A Harvard Medical School review calls lower inflammation one of the most reproducible effects of this light, in joints, injuries, lungs and the brain.

Hamblin · AIMS Biophysics · 2017

Inflammation
850

nm near-infrared, used during 3 months of treadmill training

Twenty women did the same workouts twice a week, and ten of them did it under 850 nm LEDs. The light group’s cellulite treatment cut saddlebag and thigh measurements.

Paolillo et al. · Journal of Cosmetic and Laser Therapy · 2011

Cellulite
171%

more growth in human skin cells under NASA-built LEDs

The same NASA-backed work measured faster wound healing for crew aboard a U.S. Navy submarine, and over 40% improvement in Navy SEAL training injuries.

Whelan et al. · Journal of Clinical Laser Medicine & Surgery · 2001

Wound Healing
The 60-second science 600+ skeletal muscles in your body

The hardest-working ones are on your back side

Your lats are the widest muscles in your body, and the muscles along your spine hold you upright all day. They get the least attention because you can’t see them.

A pad meets them exactly where they already are: underneath you.

Think of it like this

Charging your phone on a wireless pad. You don’t hold anything up to the light. You just lie on it.

Gray’s Anatomy, 42nd edition

What the light does

Recover between workouts

Light before exercise improved performance and lowered creatine kinase in pooled controlled trials.

Leal-Junior et al. · 2015
Light your biggest muscles

Reviews of light applied to muscle around exercise report better performance and less fatigue than placebo light.

Ferraresi, Huang & Hamblin · 2016
Open up circulation

Red and near-infrared light can free nitric oxide inside cells. Nitric oxide relaxes blood vessels.

Hamblin · 2018
Keep sessions short

Light has a dose curve: too little does nothing, the right dose helps, too much can cancel the benefit.

Huang et al. · 2009

Designed for better sessions

675 LEDs, neck to lower back

Your neck and back muscles live on the side of you that faces the floor. Valles puts red and near-infrared light under them while you lie still, with your neck on the roll.

Lie down. That’s the routine.

No panel to stand in front of and nothing to hold. Set the timer, close your eyes, and get up when it switches off.

Two wavelengths, two depths

RED · 660 nm

Absorbed in the top layers of your skin. The wavelength used in most of the skin studies.

NEAR-IR · 850 nm

Invisible to you, and it travels further into tissue, toward muscle and joints.

Ash et al. · Lasers in Medical Science · 2017

Fits into your day

Salon-level red light at home. No appointment, no commute.

Myth vs truth

What most people get wrong about red light

Myth

If 20 minutes is good, an hour is better.

Truth

Light follows a biphasic dose response: too little does nothing, the right dose helps, and too much can cancel the benefit. It’s watering a plant, not filling a pool. Use the timer.

Huang et al. · Dose-Response · 2009
Myth

Red light only reaches the surface.

Truth

Visible red is absorbed mostly in the skin, but near-infrared at 850 nm travels further, toward muscle. That’s why Valles pairs both: one for the surface, one for what’s underneath.

Ash et al. · Lasers Med Sci · 2017
Myth

A mat is just a panel lying down.

Truth

A panel shines across a gap. A mat has no gap. Light obeys the inverse-square law, so closing the distance from two feet to almost nothing changes how much of it actually reaches you.

The research

Named studies, not percentages

Every claim on this page points to a published paper. Here they are.

Meta-analysis

Light therapy and exercise recovery

Pooled controlled trials: light applied before exercise improved performance and lowered creatine kinase, a blood marker of muscle damage.

Leal-Junior et al. · Lasers in Medical Science · 2015
Review

Light therapy in human muscle

Reviewed trials of light applied to muscle around exercise. Many reported better performance and less fatigue than placebo light.

Ferraresi, Huang & Hamblin · Journal of Biophotonics · 2016
Depth

How far each color travels

Modeled light passing through skin and tissue. Longer red and near-infrared wavelengths reached deeper than shorter colors.

Ash et al. · Lasers in Medical Science · 2017
Nitric oxide

How light may open up blood vessels

Describes how red and near-infrared light can free nitric oxide from cytochrome c oxidase. Nitric oxide relaxes blood vessels.

Hamblin · Photochemistry and Photobiology · 2018

FAQ

Questions

Can I fall asleep on it?

Let the timer end the session so it switches off on its own, and don’t sleep on it with the power on. It’s a 20-minute session, not a mattress.

Will it work through a t-shirt?

Fabric blocks a lot of light. For your back, lie on it with bare skin where you want the light.

Do I need the goggles?

Lying face-up, your eyes point away from the LEDs, so most people don’t. They’re in the box for when you turn over to light your front.

Where do I keep it?

It lies flat under a bed or against a wall. Wipe the surface with a soft, slightly damp cloth after use.

Can I return it?

Yes. Request a return within 30 days of receiving it by emailing info@tharsyn.com. It needs to be unused and in its original packaging; the refund policy has the details.

Your back half called.

It wants the light too.
