The questions people ask before they buy red light therapy, answered with the science and none of the hype. Can’t find yours? Email info@tharsyn.com.

01 · How it works

The basics

What does red light therapy actually do?

Almost every cell you own has mitochondria, the power plants that make ATP, your body’s energy currency. One enzyme inside them, cytochrome c oxidase, absorbs red and near-infrared light, and studies show that changes how the cell makes energy and signals for repair.

Think of a solar panel bolted onto a power plant. It doesn’t add fuel. It helps the plant run the fuel it already has. Read the full science.

Is it the same as a tanning bed?

No. Tanning and sunburn come from ultraviolet light, wavelengths shorter than 400 nanometers. Our devices use red at 660 nm and near-infrared at 850 nm: more than twice as long, with no UV. Red light won’t tan you.

Why 660 and 850 nanometers?

Hold a flashlight against your fingertip in a dark room and it glows red. Blue and green get absorbed on the way in; red makes it through. Researchers call this the optical window, roughly 650 to 1,350 nm, where blood and water absorb the least.

660 nm red is absorbed in the skin, which is why skin studies use it. 850 nm near-infrared is invisible to you and travels deeper, toward muscle and joints.

Isn’t it just a heat lamp?

Heat is something you feel. The effect studied in red light therapy depends on color, not warmth: specific wavelengths get absorbed by one specific enzyme in your mitochondria. A space heater warms the room. It doesn’t change how your cells make energy.

How long until I notice a difference?

Think weeks, not hours. Skin and muscle rebuild on their own schedule, and the trials we cite measured results after 4 to 15 weeks of regular sessions: a 76-person wrinkle trial ran 4 weeks, and a 136-person collagen trial ran 30 sessions. Consistency beats intensity.

Is there real research behind this?

Yes. The field began in a Budapest lab in 1967 and now has thousands of published papers, including a meta-analysis of 16 randomized trials in The Lancet. We name every study we cite, with journal and year, on The Science page.

02 · Choosing

Which device is yours

Which device should I start with?

Start with the area you want to change.

  • Face: Elysium (a soft LED mask) or Gale (a dome that never touches your face).
  • Neck and shoulders: Orbit Neck.
  • Neck and back, lying down: Valles pad.
  • Everything at once: Olympus XL full-body bag.
Bag or wall panel: which is better?

Light follows the inverse-square law: twice the distance, a quarter of the light. A panel also only reaches the side of you that faces it, so you stand there and turn around halfway. A bag puts you inside the light, front and back at once, at the same short distance. That’s why Olympus XL is a bag.

Mask or dome?

A mask straps on, so your hands are free to read or scroll. Gale arches over your face without touching it: nothing to strap on, which suits people who can’t stand anything on their skin. Both take about 10 minutes.

Laser or LED: which works better?

Both can work. A 2018 review of light therapy concluded that wavelength and dose matter more than the light source. Think marching band versus crowd: a laser’s light marches in perfect step to a point, an LED’s spreads out to cover ground. Our devices use LEDs, which cover a whole area evenly.

I’m tall or broad. Will Olympus XL fit me?

Yes, up to 6'5". It’s 79 inches long and opens flat to 79 × 79 inches: lie down on the base, fold the cover over you, and your head stays out through the neck cut-out.

03 · Using it

Your routine

How often, and for how long?

Three to five sessions a week: about 10 minutes for face devices and 10 to 20 minutes for body devices. Start on a low intensity and let the timer end each session. Light has a dose curve, like coffee: more isn’t better, regular is better.

Morning or night?

Either. Your eyes have a body-clock sensor that’s most sensitive to blue light and barely registers red. That’s why a campfire feels like night and a phone screen feels like noon, and why an evening session fits right before bed.

Before or after skincare?

Use it on clean, dry skin so nothing sits between the light and your skin. Apply serums and moisturizer after the session.

Can I use more than one device?

Yes, on different areas, like a face mask while Valles does your back. Just don’t stack two devices on the same patch of skin in one session: dose adds up.

Can I fall asleep during a session?

Let the timer end the session so the device switches off on its own, and don’t sleep with one running. Treat it as a 10 to 20 minute session, not a nightlight.

How do I clean it?

Wipe it with a soft, slightly damp cloth after use. Never put a device in the washer or submerge it.

04 · Safety

Safe use

Is it safe for my eyes?

The light is bright up close, so keep your eyes closed whenever your face is lit. Olympus XL and Valles also come with light-blocking goggles.

Does it get hot?

It feels warm, not hot. The effect comes from the color of the light, not from heat, and you can lower the intensity at any time.

Who should check with a doctor first?

Talk to your doctor before you start if you’re pregnant, have a condition that makes you sensitive to light, take medication that does, or are being treated for something in the area you plan to use it on.

05 · Orders & returns

The fine print, made short

How fast will it arrive?

Orders ship within 1–3 business days with tracking. Standard US shipping is free and takes 5–8 business days. International shipping is free too and takes 10–18 business days; any import duties your country charges are paid by the buyer.

Where’s my order?

Your shipping email has a tracking number, or look it up on our order tracking page.

Can I return it?

Yes. Request a return within 30 days of receiving your order by emailing info@tharsyn.com. The item needs to be unused and in its original packaging; once your return is approved, we send you a label. Full conditions are in the refund policy.

What if it arrives damaged?

Email info@tharsyn.com within 48 hours of delivery with photos of the device and the packaging, and we’ll make it right.

Can I pay over time?
